TINGEY RESIDENCE
WASHINGTON NAVY YARD

K&G performed full project management services throughout the design and construction of the historic Tingey Residence renovation. We oversaw the architect, engineers, contractors and subcontractors and managed the team from inception to final completion. In addition, we managed the coordination associated with the approval process with the District’s historical governing agencies to include SHPO, NCPC, and CFA.

The design and construction of the project was fast-tracked so that the CNO could occupy the house in nine months from the issuance of construction documents. There was a fixed project budget from the inception of the project, and we performed value engineering to assure the project budget was not exceeded.

The Tingey Residence was built in 1804 and was one of few buildings spared when the British burned the city of Washington in 1812. The Tingey Residence was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, become the official residence of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), per Congress, in 1977, and is a Category II National Landmark. The residence was repaired and added onto several times over the years but has never undergone a rehabilitation of this scale.

The project scope of work included new HVAC system, commercial kitchen, extensive landscaping, historic preservation, façade repairs, electrical upgrades, green house renovation, and new finishes.
