1.  Create a good set of construction documents;  

2.  Ensure that the contractor is building to the plans and specifications through job site visits;  

3.  Monitor the schedule and expedite the work to avoid the problem of leaving too much work to accomplish at the end of a project; and  

4.  Prepare a comprehensive punch list.

All the myriad of construction issues will fade with time; however, the quality of a project is with you until the time you renovate or relocate.
